Four Byzantine Novels

Details

This volume is first in a new series of "Translated Texts for Byzantinists", modelled on Liverpool's long-running Translated Texts for Historians. It contains prose translations of four novels composed in Constantinople in the mid twelfth century, all based heavily on material produced during the second sophistic of the second century AD. They are Rhodanthe and Dosikles by Theodore Prodromos, Hysmine and Hysminias by Eumathios Makrembolites, Aristandros and Kallithea by Constantine Masses and Drosilla and Charikles by Niketas Eugenianos. Each is preceded with an introduction, emphasing the importance of these texts in reintroducing the genre of the novel, and discussing the significance of the novels as evidence for twelfth century concerns.
