This book is a thorough and admirably clear exposition of evolution and in particular what the fossil record shows us. It is designed for the general reader, but is never patronising, a particular strength since the book is aimed at least in part at convincing adherents of Intellegent Design theories and creationists of the proof for evolution. For those who find Richard Dawkins a bit hectoring and superior, this book may prove the tonic, palaeontologist Donald Prothero comes across more like a kind and patient uncle. It is also worth stressing just what good value the book is - beautifully designed, and packed full of photos and diagrams, the price seems a fraction of what it ought to be!
