This book publishes a range of papers showcasing recent research in Latin American and Carribean underwater archaeology. Some present data from recent excavations such as on the 16th century Pilar wreck in the Gulf of Mexico, or the skeletal data from a survey of submerged caves in the Yucatan. Others show how archival work can help in the reconstruction of shipwrecks, or how 17th century navigation charts can help identitfy areas for surveying. Finally several papers look at issues of site preservation, conservation and protection, and the damage being done to the archaeological record by treasure hunters.
