Behind the Colonnade

Details

Norman Jacobs worked at the British Museum for thirty-seven years, acquiring experience in a variety of roles and witnessing the highs and lows that beset the Museum in the last three decades of the twentieth century, from the 'Hypocrisy at the Top' expenses scandal of the 1980s to the opening of the Great Court in 2000. During that time, he encountered numerous idiosyncratic, amusing and irritating co-workers, some of whose foibles are recounted here with wryness and good humour. Jacobs also gives an account of his trade union involvement in this period of social change. In the current era of corporate irresponsibility and economic austerity, there are doubtless some lessons for the heritage sector to be learned from this memoir.
