The Near West

While scholarship in English has focused on correspondence, commerce and travel from West to East, there were also important cultural bridges being crossed between North Africa and Europe: this book will document this neglected history. It begins with a chronological overview of the political history of the Medieval Western Mediterranean, which provides the context for an exploration of the important trends in this history (Europeans in North Africa; North Africans in Europe; Traders and Merchants; Mercenaries and Slaves; and Conversion). It is primarily based upon the personal biographies of remarkable Mediterranean travellers, scholars, rulers and historians. The author navigates a middle path between the two dominant forms of historical thought in this area - that of the annaliste, structuralist school which seeks the constants of Mediterranean history, and the post-colonial constructivist school championed by Abdallah Larouri who called for a distinct history of the Maghrib from a Maghribi point of view.
