First Among Abbots

Details

Abbo of Fleury (c.945-1004) had an extraordinary, if disparate life, and made important contributions to many fields of medieval endeavour. He played a role at the forefront of politics for many years, becoming involved in the founding of the Capetian dynasty and becoming a close ally of Pope Gregory V. His work as a prelate, particularly at Fleury and earlier at York involved correcting many monastic and ecclesiastical abuses, prefiguring the eleventh century reform movement. He wrote a life of St Edmund the Martyr and also works on astronomy and mathematics. This, however, is the first modern attempt to write on his multi-faceted career as a whole, including analysis of his death at the hands of rioting monks at La Reole where he was attempting to reform the monastery.
