The Arts of Antioch

In 2000 the exhibition Antioch: The Lost Ancient City brought the discoveries of the ancient city of Antioch to the public's attention once more. A book published under the same title by Christine Kondoleon was released the same year and dealt with discoveries from the city in general terms. Shortly after this funding was secured for a more detailed study of the art treasures from the site. Arts of Antioch publishes the results of detailed interdisciplinary research carried out on the mosaics from the site and includes a catalogue of the mosaics, sculptural pieces, small finds and coins (dating from the 4th century BC to the late 12th century AD) from the Worcester Museum in Massachusetts. Following an introductory essay discussing the background to the Worcester Museum's collection and its long association with the site of Antioch, is a detailed analysis of the mosaic pavements from the Atrium House triclinium. Whilst there is a description of the mosaics, their technique and style, the overwhelming emphasis is on investigating aspects of production and technology, such as the laying of the floor, identifying the different hands involved in the production of the mosaic floor, the likely source of the stone used and the glass-making techniques employed. Whilst the iconography of the mosaics and the preparation of the floor are found to be consistent, variations are found within the quality of workmanship, the palette used, the choice of material, the use of space and in glass-making techniques. A report on the work of the mosaic conservation campaign since the 1930s, an essay on the identification of bird species in the Judgment of Paris mosaic and a report on glass-making technology at Antioch precede the catalogue.
