The Language of the Muses

This gloriously illustrated volume sets out to examine and disprove the popularly accepted notion that Roman sculptors were merely copyists (and not always good ones) doing nothing more than reproducing Greek masterpieces. The main part of the book looks at the history of collecting and studying Roman sculpture from Renaissance enthusiasts to eighteenth and nineteenth century antiquarians, showing how the Romans own self-image in part contributed to the belief that they were not naturally "artistic", and how a belief in the perfection of Greek work was formed despite very little actually surviving. The remaining section proposes an alternative model for the development of Roman sculpture, a much more complex relationship with Greek forms more akin to Roman literary endeavours.
