This intriguing book examines the multifaceted careers and cults of two fifth and sixth century saints, described by Bitel as "peripatetic, influential women responsible for building prestigious churches". Both saints had a pivotal role in the Christianisation of their respective societies, and the physical impact of this process on the landscape. Gender forms a key theme, for unlike the usual stereotype of the female saint as pious virgin martyr, Genovefa and Brigit were celebrated for the active part they played in ordering and shaping their newly Christian communities.
