Courts of Love, Castles of Hate

An accessible account of the poetry and cultural world of the troubadours. Aubrey Burl looks at the conditions in Southern France which led to a very different art form to the chansons de gestes then prevalent in Europe's northern courts. He gives the reader a real flavour of the poetry, including numerous extracts from such well-known figures as William IX of Aquitaine, Bernart de Ventadorn and Bertran de Born, as well as their female counterparts like the Countess of Die. Perhaps forgivably, you wouldn't necessarily know from the book that courtly love has been the source of massive scholarly controversy, but nevertheless it is a highly readable book, and would act well as a spur to further reading on the history and culture of the Languedoc in the High Middle Ages.
