The Archaeology of Christianity in Africa

There are a variety of forms of Christianity in Africa today, the product of years of regional diversity, squabbles and differences in the adoption and diffusion of Christian ideas and practices. This is not a history of Christianity in Africa, although the first chapter does outline the historical background, rather it confronts the archaeological evidence for the Christian faith from its emergence in the first millennium AD through to European colonialism and the missionaries of the 19th century; it is an 'investigation of diversity and change on a massive continent'. Finneran compares and contrasts archaeological evidence from different regions in Africa (Nubia, the Nile Valley, Ethiopia and the north) discussing his findings within an African, rather than European context.
