Hannibal's Armyby Ian StephensonBooks on Hannibal abound; his 'genius' is all too often their focus, with Cannae as the focal point, and one might almost forget that an army was necessary for the great man's vitory to be realized. Here Ian Stephenson takes an archaeologist's perspective to look at that army, its organization, composition, structures, use of mercenaries, equipment and so on. The army is analysed in terms of contemporary military developments, in particular to what extent it could be said to be a Hellenistic army. Stephenson closes with the interesting observation that having won successive battles with phalanx style organization, Hannibal re-equiped his troops with the weaponry of the defeated Romans, a decisive mistake. 122p b/w illus col pls (Tempus 2008) Browse other Roman Military books |
